What Kind of Goals Should You Set?

April 2, 2019

By Chelsea Garcia, PHASE IV Master Exercise Physiologist

Goals are an important in any aspect of life. Whether you are trying to get a promotion at work, pursue a new passion, or increase your health and wellness you should set achievable goals for yourself.

What kind of goals should you set?

One of the biggest points you should make when setting goals for yourself is to make sure they are SMART goals. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Setting goals that meet these five criteria will help ensure that you actually meet them.

Bad Example: I need to exercise more.

o Specific: I will walk for 30 minutes 3 days/week.

o Measureable: 30 minutes each day I exercise for one month.

o Achievable: I know I can commit to this for one month.

o Relevant: I think that exercise will impact my life in a positive way.

o Time-Bound: I will start my exercise journey on Friday.

Good Example: Because I want to exercise more, for the next month, beginning on Friday, I will walk for 30 minutes 3 days out of each week.

Change a few daily habits

This is a simple one once you get into habit of it. Start small and change one small thing in your day. This could be to stop putting cream and sugar in your daily coffee or to drink water instead of soft drinks or juice. Changing these daily habits one by one will help you eventually change your lifestyle to a more positive one. Always think about the value you are adding to your life, not what junk food or bad habit you are taking away.

Baby Steps

Everyone knows you can’t climb Mount Everest in a day. There are many different camps to reach along that massive encounter to the summit. Set your big goal and then set smaller goals that will end up getting you closer to the final big goal. Once you achieve one small goal reward yourself for what you have accomplished to help keep you on track towards that final goal.

Once goals have been met

After you have successfully met your goals you should continue to expand on them and set new or higher goals. Always keep your future in mind and ask yourself what your ideal life looks like and set goals to meet that vision. Keep your mind open to new experiences even after meeting all of those big goals you set for yourself.
