A 15-year study out of the Westmead Institute for Medical Research found that people who ate just one serving of oranges a day had over a 60% reduced risk of developing late macular degeneration 15 years later. (Science Daily)
2. Exercise may help prevent leaky gut syndrome
Researchers from San Francisco State University studied the cardiovascular fitness and teh stool bacterial composition of 37 men and women. The findings showed that those participants with the best fitness levels also had more of the beneficial gut bacteria that helps to protect the intestinal lining and stave off leaky gut syndrome. 3. Sorry, not all hunter-gatherers were “paleo”
There are some common theories that the paleo diet means lots of meat and vegetables, however archeological records are proving that theory wrong and revealing that there is no one paleo diet. “There’s been quite a lot of controversy surrounding ancient diet research, but one thing is definitely clear: hunter-gatherers eat whatever it is most efficient to hunt and gather.” (Popular Science)
4. Doctors are writing prescriptions for more outdoor time
There are more and more studies showing the physical and emotional benefits to spending more time outdoors. There are even some studies showing children with ADHD can benefit from playing outside more. That’s why some doctor’s are prescribing spending more time outside instead of medication. (NYT)
5. Quitting alcohol for one month can significantly improve your health
A recent study out of the UK studied health markets of 141 moderate drinkers over a 1 month period. The group was split into two groups. One that continued their drinking habit as usual and the other that completely abstained. After one month, the group that stopped drinking showed significant improvements in various areas including reduced blood pressure and improved insulin sensitivity. (The Washington Times)
